Does Hypnotherapy Work?
by Diana Joy - Hypnotherapy Balmain, Sydney

Most people hear the word hypnotherapy and immediately picture swinging watches, stage performers, and someone clucking like a chicken on command. Clinical hypnotherapy couldn’t be further from that. I have found it to be really useful change tool particularly in combination with somatic work or EMDR. It's a deeply calming modality and allows you to experience 'changed states' such as confidence, which you can bring more easily into the everyday.

Clinical hypnotherapy by-passes the critical mind so that you can go deep and work directly on the unconscious mind  and at the root of the issue or change – the part of you that stores habits, trauma, beliefs and patterns. It is also deeply calming and regulates the nervous system. Hypnosis is a relaxed and focussed sate (sometimes called a trance). In this state your unconscious is more open and receptive.

There are multiple ways of creating this state but most hypnotherapists will focus on relaxing the body and turning the attention inward.

Hypnotherapy works on the unconscious where a lot of our triggers and past reside. Most people know what the problem is but they continue with the pattern and can't seem to break it. You know they are unlikely to break down in the tunnel, but you avoid driving through it. You know the people at dinner are your friends but you still experience acute social anxiety. You know you haven't made a mistake, but you keep checking.

We believe we make choices with our conscious mind but evidence shows the unconscious is responsible for 95% of your choices.

For example you may be aware you choose unhealthy relationships and want to change but somehow that old unhealthy pattern keeps re-occurring in new ways.

Real lasting change happens in the unconscious mind. That's where hypnotherapy comes in.
