What Causes Anxiety? Can Hypnosis Help?

There are many factors that can influence whether you suffer from anxiety and hypnotherapy can certainly help relieve you of the symptoms.


I have worked with adults and young people (12-18) in helping successfully reduce or end the anxiety cycle and anxiety phobias. The fact is there is no one thing that is proven to cause anxiety but rather contributing factors. These are:

- Genetic disposition, it runs in the family

- It can be triggered by childhood or adult trauma or abuse

- Stress due to an illness

- Stress build-up through lifestyle or work pressures

- a reaction to drugs or coming off an anti-anxiety drug

- personality type, you may have a disposition towards stress and anxiety

- mental health disorders, anxiety often goes hand-in-hand with depression

After understanding your problem thoroughly I may then do EMDR for those that have a phobic anxiety or an anxiety around a certain event or situation such as exams or work meetings. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.  Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal.  EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma.  It is a much researched and evidenced technique.

After EMDR it is likely I will use some NLP techniques with you which are a little similar in outcome to the EMDR. In essence we are brain training you, forming new pathways in the brain.

Hypnosis for anxiety

After we will go into a hypnotherapy session which is constructed around questions you have been asked. Suggestions will be used while you are in a trance to help you relax and find a greater sense of peace. This may be for a particular anxiety or for general pervasive anxiety. While in trance I may also work with the part of you that is anxious, finding that person or part of you and having you speak to them and help heal them and make them feel safe and relaxed using NLP and psychotherapy techniques.

We may also enter the situations where you are anxious, imagining walking into the situation or the last time you felt anxious. I will then work on you somatically, while under trance, asking you to identify the feelings in the heart, below the heart or stomach area, which is often where the fight or flight feeling is held in the body. You may not even be aware of it until you are in a trance state when it becomes heightened because of the focussed state. Often people will find fear in one of these areas or it will be tight and anxious and uncomfortable. I teach you how to remove the anxiety or fear and change how it feels. Your body relearns how to feel relaxed and anxiety free.

Hypnotherapy is accumulative and exponential, building from one session to another.

Hypnotherapy for Anxiety

Before hypnotherapy it is important to have a check-up at the doctor to make sure a medical disorder is not the cause of the anxiety. Examples of medical problems that can be linked to anxiety include:

· Heart disease

· Diabetes

· Thyroid problems, such as hyperthyroidism

· Respiratory disorders, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma

· Drug misuse or withdrawal

· Withdrawal from alcohol, anti-anxiety medications (benzodiazepines) or other medications

· Chronic pain or irritable bowel syndrome

· Rare tumors that produce certain fight-or-flight hormones
