What is Hypnosis?

What is hypnosis?

Many people would like to understand what might happen if they attend a hypnosis session with a hypnotherapist. I will describe to you a typical session. Because I work as a hypnotherapist, somatic energy worker and NLP practitioner, I use a combination approach drawing on all these modalities.

The first session is usually 2 hours long. During this session I will ask you all sorts of questions about the problem and identify the key goal. Anxiety, smoking, weight loss, confidence building, phobias, IBS and chronic pain all require slightly different approaches.

I will do an exercise with you to check you can be hypnotised as it isn't the right therapy for everyone. I will also check you are aligned to really wanting to change. If your partner has sent you in to stop smoking and you don't really want to, the hypnotherapy is not going to work. You need to want the change and be fully on board.

Once I have learnt about your life and your daily routines, what you eat and what the problem is we will discuss what the change will look like. How will your life be different after hypnotherapy? How can we shift your daily schedule to assist you to achieve your goals?

How will it feel being anxiety free and how will that impact your life? What is the value to you in going through this process? How will it feel being a non-smoker or no longer being afraid of needles and how will this affect your life? Do you want to be able to learn faster and retain information? Perhaps you are wanting help with insomnia, chronic fatigue or a chronic indecisiveness.

What is hypnotherapy?

We then look at self-help tools, things you can take away to assist you in your daily life and make you more mindful and aware.

We may then look at NLP - re-wiring your brain. This may involve bringing in the anxiety you have around needles. We then layer over top of this having you imagine sound, visuals and feelings to build a new pathway. You will find when you go back to the anxiety about needles and try and try and locate it, it becomes harder and harder to find. If you have had a traumatising event we may do EMDR which is a technique to reduce the emotional charge around an incident such as death of a loved one or fear after violence.

The hypnotherapy itself involves you being guided into a relaxed state, which is essentially a meditation state. While you are conscious and can hear and respond to what I say you will feel deeply peaceful and relaxed. I will guide you through a landscape and use particular techniques to help you let go of your busy mind chatter.

I will then guide you through a visualisation and I will imbed suggestions that are aligned to your goals. By working with the unconscious we are able to work with the part of you that is actually in charge. Our mind thinks it's boss, but 95% of our choices are governed by the unconscious part of us. We have all sorts of scripts running us, many of which we are not even aware of.

During this process we may be introduced to the part of us that still wants to smoke, the anxious part of us, the part of us that feels victimised or angry. We can talk to that part while in trance and identify how to let go and learn what that part of us needs to let go. Do they need a feeling of safety? Do they need love? Do they need family and support? You will be possibly surprised how much is revealed through this process and how authentic the answers will be when you mind steps out of the way and allows your unconscious to speak. We bring a feeling of resolve to the part of you that is not in balance. We give them what they need.

We may then move into the body and work with locating where the feeling is - what part of you is anxious? Where do you hold it? What part of you is angry or shy or feeling victimised? Where do you hold it? Once we have located it I will teach you how to work with changing the feeling in this space of your body as well as how to think differently to change the feeling in this space in the body. It's very powerful.

What I love about this combination of modalities is how fast we can work with your issues and bring about the change you seek. Generally we can create the change you want in 4 sessions.
