Lack of sleep can lead to low mood, fatigue, a less effective immune system, cloudy thinking, anxiety and through the anxiety an inability to digest food properly and absorb the nutrients. Sleep is so important for good health in both the mind and body and we need it to regenerate and heal. Adequate time in each sleep cycle is vital to restore the energy systems so it can perform all the functions necessary for your wellbeing. Insomnia can be caused by a state of hyper arousal – our nervous system locked into a stressful ‘tired but ‘wired’ feeling. This might be because there is something worrying us, we may feel unsafe or under a lot of pressure. We may not even be aware of the white noise of stress that’s creating the hyper arousal. Hypnotherapy can help you identify what these worries or fears are and together we can calm those fears. The unconscious is not logical so sometime we have to go very deep to find the story underneath insomnia and work on 'younger self issues'. Because every person's insomnia is unique, the combination of tools I use will be different for every person. These are some of the underlying reasons I've found in clients who can't sleep:
Childhood trauma around fear of sleeping alone or waking up at night alone
Stressed nervous system, so dysregulated it won't allow sleep
Anxiety of having anxiety leading to an inability to sleep
Underlying abandonment issues playing in the the unconscious in an unsteady relationship
Relationship break-up
Unprocessed grief
Fear of being fired
Fear of being criticised at work, "if I make a mistake I will feel terrible about myself"
