OCD Hypnotherapy:
Can Hypnotherapy Help OCD?

If you live with OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), you may feel as though your mind is constantly searching for something to solve, check, prevent or make certain.

An intrusive thought appears. Anxiety rises. You feel compelled to analyse the thought, check something, seek reassurance or perform a behaviour to make the anxiety settle.

For a while, you feel better. Then the thought comes back. This cycle can be exhausting.

Hypnotherapy can be a useful complementary approach for some people with OCD, particularly when anxiety and nervous-system activation are making intrusive thoughts feel more intense and difficult to manage.

So, how can hypnotherapy help OCD?

What I work on with hypnotherapy is helping you access a deeply relaxed and focused state where we can work with patterns of anxiety, attention and emotional response.

Rather than trying to force intrusive thoughts away, we focus on helping your nervous system become less reactive. This may involve working with: feelings of safety, anxiety and physical tension relaxation, emotional regulation, your ability to step back from intrusive thoughts and be the observer, building self-trust and confidence.

The aim is to create more space between having a thought and feeling that you must respond to it. Calm the body to calm the mind. This is central to my approach.

Can hypnotherapy stop intrusive thoughts?

Unfortunately, no, hypnosis cannot stop intrusive thoughts. The goal of hypnotherapy for OCD isn't to make your mind completely free of intrusive thoughts. It’s not possible.

Everyone has unwanted thoughts. The difference with OCD is often the meaning and importance attached to them, and the anxiety and compulsive responses that follow.

Hypnotherapy can help you develop a calmer internal state and a different relationship with anxiety. When the body feels safer, the mind doesn't have to work so hard to identify and solve every perceived threat. That can make intrusive thoughts feel less overwhelming.

Hypnotherapy for OCD in Sydney

I work with people experiencing anxiety, intrusive thoughts and nervous-system dysregulation from my practice in Balmain, Sydney.

My approach is body-first and integrative, drawing on hypnotherapy, breathwork, somatic approaches and other therapeutic techniques. Rather than simply trying to think your way out of anxiety, we work with what is happening in your body as well as what is happening in your mind.

For people with OCD, hypnotherapy may be used as a complementary approach alongside appropriate OCD treatment.

Your brain is designed to generate thoughts. Your nervous system is designed to respond to perceived threat. When that system becomes overly activated, thoughts can become louder, stickier and harder to ignore.

If OCD and intrusive thoughts are taking up too much space in your life, hypnotherapy may help you develop greater calm, resilience and freedom in how you respond.

Calm the body and the mind can begin to follow.
